Mizusashi are lidded containers that were used to hold fresh cold water during tea ceremonies. This water would be added to a kettle and then brought to a boil to make tea. The ceramic body of this mizusashi is of Hizen ware, named for the province in which it was made: Hizen, on the southern island of Kyushu.
