Seine Cart is one of four lithographs Davis made through the Graphic Arts Program of the Federal Art Project. The initiative funded printed work during the Great Depression that was distributed to libraries and universities. This print was inspired by the year (1928–29) the artist spent in Paris, painting street scenes that expressed how the forces of modernity were transforming daily life there—a theme that also resonated with changes in his home city, New York. Seine Cart demonstrates Davis’s pioneering pairing of the visual language of Cubism with an interest in contemporary urban subjects inspired by his early training with Robert Henri, leader of the Ashcan School painters, a group known for depictions of city life.
