Rafael Coronel, Mexican, 1932–2019
2001-62
A member of an esteemed artistic family and the son-in-law of the painter Diego Rivera, Coronel was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, where the museum bearing his name is located today. He is a member of the Generación de la Ruptura, or Breakaway Generation, a group of Mexican artists who, following World War II, rejected the nationalist focus of the large-scale mural painters who preceded them in favor of work that combines visual references to the history of art with a focus on everyday life in Mexico. In this melancholic portrait, Coronel employs expressive brushstrokes and somber tones of brown and red that recall the Spanish Baroque paintings of Diego Velázquez (1599–1660) to depict the profile of a man gazing out from the canvas.
