Christ Before Caiaphas,
ca. 1705–10
Francesco Trevisani, Italian, 1656–1746
2001-216
Jesus faces the high priest Caiaphas, who tears his robe while accusing Christ of blasphemy for identifying himself as the Messiah. Trevisani underscores the intensity of the confrontation with dramatic light effects. In the foreground, the jeering crowd includes the owner of a monkey on a chain, which mimics Christ’s bound hands, its arms behind its back.
