Shitao - Van Gogh PUAM,
2002–03
Zhang Hongtu 張宏圖, born 1943, Pingliang, China; active New York, NY
2003-144
In Shitao—Van Gogh PUAM, Zhang restages the early Qing artist Shitao’s An Ancient House under Tall Pine Trees (about 1700), by painting it in the style of Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890), who was himself influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e prints from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Of his frequent appropriation of canonical motifs and styles, both Eastern and Western, Zhang has said, "Everybody knows these are clichés, but I use them because they are something I have in common with people—they are public images, which I try to let people see from a new angle."

Title on painting: Shitao An Ancient House under Tall Pine Trees
An angry lion tearing at a rock,
A thirsty steed galloping to a spring,
Wind and rain gathering,
Mist and clouds in myriad shapes,
Sublime and unworldly,
Calm, steady, and straightforward.
I apply these feelings with my brush and ink.
Will not the connoisseur upon seeing this die of laughter?
Ignored the wind, rain, mist and clouds described in the poem but remade it my way, I give you my apologies, Shitao.
