Josephus Justus Scaliger,
1593
Hendrick Goltzius, 1558–1617; born Mülbracht, Netherlands; died Haarlem, Netherlands
x1934-1317
The University of Leiden commissioned this portrait from Goltzius as part of a generous compensation package for the preeminent philologist Josephus Justus Scaliger, who the university successfully convinced to relocate to the Netherlands from France. The portrait could be distributed singly or used as a frontispiece for Scaliger’s publications. Symbols of learning and eloquence as well as a family coat of arms, which had previously been confined to the reverse of medals, now form the frame.
