Le Gourmet en compagnie (The Breakfast),
ca. 1664
Adriaen van Ostade, Dutch, 1610–1685
x1934-510
A highly influential painter and draftsman, Van Ostade was also one of the most important printmakers working in Holland in the seventeenth century. His work generally consists of sympathetic genre scenes depicting peasants pleasantly absorbed in their daily routines, bathed in softened contrasts of natural light. This etching was produced in the 1660s, at the height of the artist’s mature output, and portrays different levels of Haarlem society. While The Breakfast presents a good-natured peasant family crowded together in their single room to enjoy a meal, The Painter depicts a middle-class artist at work in a studio on the ground floor of his home.
