Village Fair,
1685
Cornelis Dusart, 1660–1704; born and died Haarlem, Netherlands
x1934-454
Dusart depicted outdoor scenes of Dutch peasants—at work and at play—with a pronounced element of caricature. A quartet of frenzied and teetering dancers is the focus of this lively composition, which includes a troupe of acrobats, itinerant quacks, and numerous children, several of whom bully a smaller child while others play marbles. Although Dusart did not specify the occasion for this village fair, he identified the inn on the left with a banner that reads "Gulde Schenk Kan" (The Golden Tankard), suggesting that alcohol fueled the unruly behavior in the scene and thus conforming to upper-class stereotypes of rural life.
