The Lady Brownlow,

ca. 1681

Isaac Becket, British, 1653–1719
after Gerard Soest, Dutch, ca. 1600–1681
x1937-288
One of the earliest native British mezzotinters, Beckett specialized in reproductive portraits of aristocrats of all ages, such as this charming likeness of Lady Elizabeth Brownlow (1681–1723), later Countess of Exeter. Members of the general public eagerly collected such images of upper-class elites for the prominence of the sitters and their artistic quality. The inscription in the lower right provides the address of the print’s publisher, Alexander Browne, a major player in the late seventeenth-century London art market.
