In a brilliant flash of light the explosive sound of war is captured in this pictorial news report of the Russo-Japanese War (1904–5). During the second effort to blockade Russian warships inside Port Arthur, the Fukimaru, a cargo vessel being used as a blockship, was hit by artillery fire and exploded. Lieutenant Commander Hirose Takeo died while trying to rescue members of his crew and became honored as a national war hero.
