The Spring Gardens at Vauxhall were the most prominent of the commercial pleasure gardens to arise in London in the eighteenth century. They were popular with all levels of British society; for a single admission fee anyone could have access to private supper rooms and public entertainment— from fireworks to musical performances. In this etching from 1785, resplendent with caricatures of famous personalities from the day, the British satirical artist Thomas Rowlandson represented the boisterous, often risqué, mix of high and low society typically seen in Vauxhall Gardens.
