Description
The Song dynasty poet and artist Su Shi 蘇軾 is portrayed peering intently at an inkstone held in front of him with both hands. The bold lines that define his robe are meant to capture the distinctive ink brushwork of the Qing dynasty painter Huang Shen, whose portrait of Su Shi was used as a model for Gui Lüzhen (zi: Zongxing 中行) who in 1885 had this image cut in stone in the Xiaoyao Tang 逍遙堂 hall in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province.
