Fortitude, Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Rome,

ca. 1760

Jean-Robert Ango, French, died after 1773
after Camillo Rusconi, Italian, 1658–1728
formerly attributed to Augustin Pajou, French, 1730–1809
x1948-410
Here the diagonal movement in depth of a Virtue seems to have interested Pajou. He annotated the drawing "al Collegio Romano in Roma" as a reminder that the figure is in a church attached to what was then the Jesuit college in Rome. Pajou drew after a wide variety of sculptures, creating a repertory on paper that he could consult later. Making drawings served, moreover, as an exercise for closely studying and reproducing on paper the forms created by the great masters, both painters and sculptors.
