Head of a Young Woman with Lips Parted
Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, Italian, 1682–1754
x1948-768
In addition to finished chalk portrait drawings of specific individuals, the Venetian painter Piazzetta specialized in character heads such as this one, which conveys the essential elements of his model’s facial features in an arresting, snapshot-like manner. Despite the foxing (or spotting) of the paper, Piazzetta’s delicate handling of the white highlights is still apparent in this drawing of a young woman, who seems to be engaged in conversation.
