La revue blanche,

1895

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1864–1901; born Albi, France; died Château de Malromé, Saint-André-du-Bois, France
Published by Charpentier and Fasquelle, French, active late 19th century
x1953-124
In 1895, Toulouse-Lautrec was commissioned to produce this poster advertising the arts journal La Revue Blanche, published and edited by Thadée Natanson and his brothers from 1891 to 1903. The groundbreaking magazine championed the most avant-garde artists, writers, critics, and composers of the day. The fashionable young woman who appears to float across the poster was Natanson’s wife, Misia, a noted beauty often painted by Lautrec and his contemporaries, who was known as a gifted pianist and a patron of the arts.
