Vito Acconci, American, 1940–2017
2014-6
In October 1969, Acconci performed this conceptual piece in which he followed a different randomly chosen person each day until he or she entered a private location. The process varied from a few minutes to several hours and sometimes involved journeys across New York City. For Acconci, the movement of strangers’ bodies on the city streets provided the structure and duration for his own actions, which in turn raised questions about privacy, public space, and individual autonomy.
