Still Life,

ca. 1906–1908

Adolf de Meyer, 1868–1946; born Paris, France; died Los Angeles, CA; active London, England, Paris, France, and Hollywood, California
x1983-1468
De Meyer’s gauzy, atmospheric portraits of fashionable celebrities and film stars appeared on the pages of Vogue and Vanity Fair from 1913 and 1921, but his photographs were first published in Alfred Stieglitz’s quarterly journal Camera Work between 1903 and 1907. A master of tonality, De Meyer skillfully manipulated the lighting of his still lives and portraits to maximize their symbolic effect.
