La camiseta (The Undershirt),

1979, printed 2012

Marcelo Brodsky, born 1954, Buenos Aires, Argentina; active Buenos Aires
2013-55
When a coup d’état in 1976 launched nine years of military dictatorship in Argentina, twenty-two-year-old Brodsky fled into exile in Barcelona, Spain, fearing persecution from the regime; his brother, Fernando, was among the many students who were kidnapped, tortured, and killed by the government. Here, Victor Basterra, a survivor of a clandestine detention camp, holds a fading photograph of Fernando that he smuggled out of the camp. With this work, the artist elegizes his lost brother and underscores the ways in which photography can serve as a conduit to connect with loved ones who have died.
