Untitled (Death Valley),

1938

Edward Weston, 1886–1958; born Highland Park, IL; died Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA
x1971-511
Untitled (Death Valley) is one of a series of photographs taken by Weston as part of a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship between 1937 and 1939. The first photographer to be awarded the honor, Weston used his grant to travel by car across the American West and Southwest. Here, he foregrounded the arid, windswept surface of the rocky desert terrain, transforming the natural environment into a strange and alien landscape. Weston published the photographs from this project in California and the West, written in collaboration with his partner and travel companion, Charis Wilson.
