In Lunar Transformations, a portfolio of ten prints, Gittleman examines and interprets empirical scientific knowledge through an artistic lens. The source for these vivid images is a series of black-and-white photographs taken in 1971 during the Apollo 15 mission to the moon, the first in which the Lunar Roving Vehicle was used. Through close cropping, the addition of bright color, and an emphasis on contrast and shadow, Gittleman transformed the craters, cracks, and crevices of the lunar surface into graphic, abstract forms, highlighting the otherworldly nature of the recently explored terrain.
