Notre Dame, Paris,
ca. 1853
Édouard Baldus, 1813–1889; born Prussia; died Arcueil, France
x1979-102
Baldus immigrated to France in 1838 to study painting, but by the 1850s he had built an international reputation as a leading architectural photographer. In 1851, the Historic Monuments Commission of France selected Baldus as one of five photographers charged with the documentation of the nation’s architectural heritage, published in lavishly bound albums of large-format photographs that captured France’s medieval and Romanesque past. This image of the cathedral of Notre-Dame, taken from a third-floor window of a neighboring building to accentuate the geometric precision of the church’s facade, was included in an album devoted to the monuments of Paris.
