Minor White, 1908–1976; born Minneapolis, MN; died Boston, MA; active Portland, OR, and Rochester, NY
x1981-68
White summarized his approach to picture-making as the “camera as a way of life.” Cofounder of the photography magazine Aperture and an influential teacher throughout his career, White drew upon the formalism of the work of Alfred Stieglitz (whose photograph is on view nearby) and Ansel Adams, while imbuing his images with personal experience. Lubec, Maine is both a formal document of White’s frequent travels there and an abstracted atmospheric fragment reminiscent of the location’s wintry weather.
