William Eggleston, born 1939, Memphis, TN; active Memphis
x1990-36
In 1976, Eggleston was given one of the first solo retrospective exhibitions of color photography at the Museum of Modern Art, establishing him as one of the great champions of color’s artistic potential. He created large-format prints of subjects that would generally be seen only in snapshots, showing everyday life in the southeastern United States on an unprecedented scale. Here, Eggleston treats all parts of the composition equally, layering similar patterns on top of each other to create an image that could only be successful in color.
