One of the most renowned photographers of the nineteenth century, Nadar was vital in the early elevation of the photographic portrait to the status of fine art. His personal connections to the many members of the French cultural elite who frequented his studio allowed him to create celebrity portraits that were praised for capturing their sitters’ very essence. In this photograph from the serial publication Galerie Contemporaine, Nadar accentuated Baron Taylor’s imposing physical mass. Known throughout France as a leading philanthropist dedicated to the support of struggling artists and writers, Taylor is rendered here as an indomitable monument to generosity.
