Robert Rauschenberg’s interest in the everyday world, his unrestrained generosity of spirit, and his enthusiasm to share his worldly perceptions shaped him into one of the most influential artists of his time. By working with what he called “the gap between art and life,” Rauschenberg developed an entirely new visual language that emphasized collage as a microcosm of the larger, messier world. In the print Recall, Rauschenberg creates a cacophonous assemblage of images habitually gleaned from magazines. Some of the images were used in previous works, such as Payload, a print from 1962. Rauschenberg rarely intends to convey specific meanings in his work. Recall relies not on what the visual signifiers mean, but rather on how these signifiers behave compositionally.
