Chinese landscape artists often favored dramatic panoramic views. However, here the painter Wang Zhao’s use of a close-up view nevertheless presents an impressive landscape in which two men, seated near the edge of a seemingly sheer cliff, contemplate a waterfall in the middle distance. The gnarled and twisted tree branches and distance peaks provide a very loose stylistic connection to the landscapes of the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279), which were sources of inspiration for Wang.
