Late Ming aesthetic theories played a role in shaping the Hangzhou artist Lan Ying’s interest in working in the idioms of past masters. In this picture of a scene along a river, he draws upon the blue-green landscape painting tradition, using light green wash on the ground and blue wash for the distant mountains.
