Wang Hui was one of the most celebrated painters of the late seventeenth century, bringing new energy to past landscape traditions by developing a synthesis of historical painting styles. In this scroll, Wang Hui imitates the brush manner of Wang Meng (about 1308–1385), one of the Four Masters of the Yuan dynasty (1260–1368). More than simply copying, however, Wang Hui also incorporates the mannerisms of other masters, blending and transforming them into his own distinct style. The painting emphasizes brush lines and the colors of fall but ends at far left with distant mountains in a light blue wash.
