Banks of the Seine,

1925

Samuel Halpert, American, 1884–1930
y1969-94
As a child, Halpert immigrated to New York from Russia. His early artistic training was at the traditional École des Beaux-Arts in Paris; however, upon encountering the work of Post-Impressionist artists such as Paul Cézanne, he adopted a more avant-garde style. Banks of the Seine was completed on a trip to Paris with the artist’s wife, Edith, who in the following year established New York’s Downtown Gallery, a major venue for the display of advanced American art.
