Study for "Big Peppermint" Painting,
1969–1970
Wayne Thiebaud, 1920–2021; born Mesa, AZ; died Sacramento, CA
2001-211
The confectionary lines and colors of Thiebaud's Study for "Big Peppermint" Painting reflect the artist's interest in correlating the subjects he depicts, specifically the sweet foodstuffs of everyday life, and the manner in which he depicts them. Here, the hard lines and soft shading of the colored pencil reproduce the manufactured form and sugary texture of a peppermint stick. Although the title for the drawing suggests that it is a study for a larger work, no such work seems to exist.;
