From 1974 to 1979 the horse was a favorite subject of Susan Rothenberg, who assiduously explored both its symbolic associations and its formal possibilities. The artist utilized full-body as well as closely cropped and inverted views: the fi rst approach resulted in relatively recognizable subjects, the latter in evocative abstractions, as seen here. Untitled was created using an additive process: the work is made of successive layers of lines and tones rendered using a variety of printing methods. This process complicates the relationship between figure and ground, confusing both shape and depth perception.
