Seated Woman,

1964

Richard Diebenkorn, 1922–1993; born Portland, OR; died Berkeley, CA; active Bay Area, CA, and Santa Monica, CA
2005-243

Diebenkorn’s dramatic return to figurative painting between 1956 and 1966 is exemplified in this vibrant gouache of a seated woman in a patterned robe. A monochromatic wash drawing of the same subject was included in an April 1964 exhibition of the artist’s work at Stanford University and was reproduced on the printed exhibition poster. Diebenkorn painted over several of the posters with gouache, creating unique variations on the composition. In this tautly layered example, the dynamic interaction between the printed lines and the broadly brushed colors reflects the interplay between representation and abstraction that is found throughout the artist’s work.
