Earth as Seen from the Moon,
ca. 1920
More Context

An artist and scientist, Howard Russell Butler, Class of 1876, painted planetscapes, eclipses, and portraits. In an age when black-and-white astrophotography was well developed—as seen in works by Rutherfurd as well as Loewy and Puiseux also on display—but color photography was not yet refined, Butler’s painting was valued for his system of recording color. His skills were also used to scientifically depict worlds that no camera was able to reach, for example the surface of Mars or, in this painting, Earth as seen from the moon.
