The Pantaloon or Cassandre,
1618–20
Jacques Callot, French, 1592–1635
x1934-117
Pantaloon is a stock character in commedia dell’arte, an Italian theatrical form that fi rst appeared in the sixteenth century. Callot, a French artist, worked at the Medici court from 1614 to 1621 and probably developed an interest in this form of improvisational theater during his Italian sojourn. In 1618, Callot published a trio of prints depicting commedia dell’arte characters. This print emphasizes the physical and psychological exaggerations that characterized commedia dell’arte.
