More Context

Chikanobu’s nuanced image plays on historical presentations of otherness. As in Homer’s The Trysting Place—but in reverse—he represents the self in the guise of the other, rendering one’s own culture foreign by degrees. Presented is the Japanese imperial family outfitted in European-style finery in a landscape with Western architecture, gaslights, and a truss bridge.
