Description

This is a memorial portrait of the actor Arashi Kitsusaburō I, who died unexpectedly in the autumn of 1820. His fellow actor, Nakamura Utaemon III, wrote the inscription in the print, recalling their meeting in the summer of 1820 and their plan for a combined performance.

Here Arashi plays the role of Mashiba Hisayoshi, who was the fictional name for the historical figure Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536–1598). The Tokugawa government did not permit plays about recent historical figures or incidents, so the fictional name was used here to evade government censorship.
