In this painting, Qiu Zhijie comments on a dilemma for those living in contemporary China, questioning a society in which events are viewed as either complete successes or abject failures. A few astronauts may indeed reach the moon, but for most people the moon is an unobtainable dream. The dilemma is satirized in the Chinese title, which can either mean "landing on the moon," or, as depicted here, represent the futility of trying, literally, to "climb up to the moon."
