Pair of lions,

Before 1889

Cast by J. L. Mott Ironworks
A. Schiffelman, German
PP308.1-.2
Lions removed from the front of Nassau Hall in 1910 (called, at the time, "Old North") and replaced with A.P. Proctor's Tigers.

More Context

This pair of bronzed lions flanked the entrance to Nassau Hall until 1911, when they were replaced by the tigers that guard the building today. For decades, the lions were misattributed to the French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, the designer of the Statue of Liberty. In the 1990s they were correctly identified as having been produced by the now-defunct J. L. Mott Ironworks, a company that sold zinc statuary and bathroom fixtures through catalogs.
