Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1864–1901; born Albi, France; died Château de Malromé, Saint-André-du-Bois, France
Published by A. Arnould, French, active late 19th century
x1953-125
This image of a well-dressed man—used as the cover for a sales catalog of posters by contemporary artists, published by the lithographer Arnauld—represents Lautrec’s friend Maxime Dethomas, a painter, enjoying the favors of a willing courtesan. Between 1893 and 1896, Lautrec produced a substantial number of works based on the private world of the Parisian maison closes, or brothels, which were a central—but decadent—feature of Montmartre nightlife in the 1890s. Lautrec’s intimate depictions of prostitutes and their clients culminated in 1896 with his celebrated portfolio of eleven prints entitled Elles, as well as this color lithograph.
