Lucas Samaras, American, born Greece, 1936
x1977-168
Already well versed in sculpting, painting, and performance art, Samaras became interested in the expressive possibilities of instant film. With this type of film, once a photograph is taken, the print passes through a set of rollers in the camera to ensure the even distribution of photographic chemicals. While the photograph developed, Samaras would smear, stipple, and smudge its surface with his hands or a stylus. These gestures abstracted the image in highly painterly ways, as seen in this example.
