A self-taught printmaker, Morandi began to make etchings while still a student in the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. He remained a dedicated graphic artist throughout his career, producing 133 etchings in his lifetime. His distinctive style uses complex networks of pure line of various thicknesses to represent the broad range of tonal values that are a hallmark of his still-life paintings.
