Stormy Landscape,

1831

John Constable, 1776–1837; born East Bergholt, England; died Hampstead, London, England
1998-869
Constable’s fascination with changing weather conditions is captured in this rapid outdoor sketch, which was made toward the end of his successful career as a landscape painter. On the verso of the drawing is a letter, dated December 19, 1831, and sent from Well Walk House in Hampstead, a fashionable suburb of London, where Constable and his family lived from 1827 to 1837. The hilly setting is one Constable would have seen at Hampstead Heath—still one of London’s best-loved green spaces—which afforded sweeping panoramas and open skies.
