The headline “New Ritual Slayings” at the upper left refers to the story of four individuals under the influence of LSD said to have murdered the family of Captain Jeffrey MacDonald in what appeared to be ritualistic killings. In the Los Angeles Herald the same day, “Winds, Rain Help Man in Florida ‘Slick’ Battle” reports on an environmental disaster in which six thousand gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Florida.
