This set of four prints depict famous sites in Edo (present-day Tokyo) in the four seasons: cherry blossoms at Gotenyama in spring, full moon at Ryogoku Bridge in summer, the autumn maple leaves at Kaianji temple, and snow at the Sumida River in winter. A short poem is inscribed on each print to resonate the scene:
What can be sweeter?
A windless day
Scent and hue of blossoms!
Where do the fireworks glitter on high –
The meeting and parting crowd pass on?
'Tis Ryogoku Bridge.
The Maples dyed by autumn
Make a fine brocade
There is neither warp nor woof!
The snowflakes fall and float
On the Sumidagawa tide –
I think of the Miyakadori dancers.
