Bullet through Banana,
1964, printed 1985
Harold Eugene Edgerton, 1903–1990; born Freemont, NE; died Cambridge, MA; active Cambridge, MA
x1987-20.6
Working within the tradition of stop-motion photography, Edgerton used high-speed photography to capture phenomena that would otherwise have escaped perception. An MIT professor, an inventor, and a businessman, Edgerton claimed that his lifework was driven by the insights and questions surrounding "the experience of seeing the unseen." This image comes from a series capturing the exact moment a bullet pierces a piece of fruit, just before the fruit disintegrates—an instant too brief to be seen by the naked eye.
