Multitudes

Multitudes was an installation of works from the Art Museum’s collections of Modern and Contemporary Art which explores the expressive power of accretion, amalgamation, repetition and collaborative practice across varied media.

As systems of production and replication were automated then digitized throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, artists have grappled with the methods and meaning of this development in their practice. Artworks by El Anatsui, Vik Muniz, Howardena Pindell, Allan McCollum, John Baldessari and others ask us to consider questions such as: how does the presence of the artist’s hand, incorporation of chance-based procedures, or reliance on personal memory confront systems of mechanized production?
